finished the mirror, it turned out like so:
PB300002
not bad but I decided not to keep it for myself and am instead giving it away as a gift.

Studio overhaul is underway. My biggest inspiration has been this:

Shelves, Magnetic Rack, Ribbon Rack, Tools - North East Corner

I’ve thrifted a lot of useful items for my own particular craft and gathered containers to display tools and items which are aesthetically pleasing to look at.

When I’m away from home I stay inspired with some magazines.
I’ve been meaning to share this “Food & Drink” art zine I got a few months ago. Really beautiful art, so nicely printed. Feels good to hold and sniff and review again and again.

I wouldn’t mind ordering volume II but I’m focusing on things with lots of words to keep me busy.

I haven’t been able to find Zink anywhere lately, which is just as well because I just like it for the pictures.

I finally took the plunge and ordered a copy of Uppercase and am totally hooked.
The layout is fantastic but in general the content is pretty great. My new favorite thing is going to Ledo, getting 2 beers and a small pizza, and reading this magazine.

ISSUE #10

All in all my master plan to get organized is still going well and I am looking forward to a productive 2012.

well I have been occupying as much of my time out doors as possible. Camping, walking, hiking, etc.
Summer was great but not too productive in terms of craft.
I do have some book review stuff and links to write here, and I’m making it a personal goal to post a song some time next week. Because.
I picked up two zines a few months back.
Through Uppercase magazine (a magazine i’ve yet to check out but whose blogs I follow), I found ‘walk on the wild side’, and purchased that zine on a whim. It immediately reminded me of my own zine-creating past, albeit in color and way better design/layout. Its pretty simple and straightforward, quick as far as reading goes, but a real delight for a diy zine collector.

I also finally made it by Atomic to pick up Snobaltimore, a few weeks after its well-earned hype and press died down. This one was a really great read over beers and a burger. Nicely researched history and funny facts. This one really made me miss doing zine-y stuff.

Well anyway, coming soon: more jewelry again, more teens and flappers, a scratchy record or two, and maybe some adventures in home-decor.

SO-EN magazine, feb 2010

SO-EN magazine, feb 2010, originally uploaded by Hillary Lang.

So-En is my favorite fashion magazine. Unfortunately I’m not able to get them regularly.. subscribing in the US would cost almost $200, I believe.
Sometimes I remember to search flickr for new scans. I’ve posted some scans of my own before.
My scanner doesn’t work with my new computer. How ^@*@! stupid.

on jewelry in photos

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

One thing that I like to imagine is fancy photoshoots with my jewelry.
When I take classes, the creative process is driven by an art jewelry aestetic, encouraging creative design. But that doesn’t work so well for me.
Personally, I like fashion jewelry. I like a lot of jewelry from J Crew. I love contrived editorials in magazines. I collect inspiring photos in a scrapbook and from that I draw ideas for jewelry. I think about clothing and settings and I try to envision where my jewelry would be fitting. I sometimes think about jewelry, inspired by other ideas for complimentary clothing and styles that I won’t make the effort to create. So I focus on the jewelry.
In the course of my fashion magazine perusal, I’ve been drawn to photos that really showcase the jewelry. My favorite magazine for this is Zink. I don’t know what I’d do without Zink. Almost every issue has an editorial that’s heavy on the jewelry.

Now this one’s on the corny side but I selected it because unlike the other photos I have here, it features a touch of color.

I love necklaces and boobs. Or jewelry on nudes, in general. As you can see, Zink is big on that.

In these ads, the jewelry is well displayed. Too bad it’s not that cool.

I really like to see photos where jewelry is well integrated with clothing and yet entirely noticeable. Some of these are actually from Teen Vogue, which is my second-favorite american fashion magazine. Unfortunately I cropped some of them before the “whole picture” was of interest to me.
The Zink photos are great, but too consistently they leave out color. Searching the internet for “jewelry editorial” turns up lots of results from this epic shoot from “Flair” magazine (Italy, I believe):

I love this kind of effort.
